I am doing research on dog food and would like to no a few facts about what goes in to it and is it healthy for a dog. I have read that it has a lot of animal crap in it? Is it healthy to feed a dog a healthy meal consuming a healthy amount of vegetables; ie carrot, cauliflower...and chicken, fish, potatoes and...

There are many different formulas for dog foods and there is not a single formula that is hands down best for all breeds. The best thing to do is to read the labels. Go to your local pet store and just check them all out. Some dogs require diets with less protein. Others have allergy issues to consider, for instance my dog can not eat any product containing corn. Then there are also difference between wet and dry foods. Some dogs can't handle wet foods (my dog included), while other breeds may get more benefits from wet food. In terms of including more natural ingredients, usually that is when you start to look into foods like blue buffalo or hill's SD. But it is not a simple question that you are asking. Health concerns, age, breed, allergies, activity level, and other considerations need to be taken into effect when choosing which dog food is truly the healthiest for a particular dog.

I definitely would not buy any products from the big-box stores (petsmart, petco) because a lot of the brands they carry have a lot of filler ingredients, which have no positive benefit to the dog. You can read ingredients on the back of the bag and they are listed in order of abundance.

I would suggest finding a specialty/all-natural type store that can carry some of the following brands: Evo, Innova, California Natural, Fromm, Canidae, Holistic Select, Wellness, Orijen... These are more expensive (as they do not have unnecessary filler) but in the end, your dog's health is worth it.

PetFlow.com has a good selection of organic dog food. The nice thing is, you can enter your dog's age and any other special needs to find the most appropriate pet food. You can view the ingredients of each dog food right on the website. They carry Newman's Own Dog Food which has pretty great reviews.

DogFoodAdvisor.com has a good (unbiased) review/breakdown of Newman's Own dog food and rates it as highly recommended: http://www.dogfoodadvisor.com/dog-food-r...

I hope this helps!
