It sounds like there is plenty of blame all the way around, but I am not sure what damages you could recover other than something for mental anguish. Her problem could have easily been diagnosed if someone simply told the ER doctors that she had not had a bowel movement for several days.

The first hospital was negligent because when taking her history, someone should have asked if she was constipated. Instead they gave her pain medication (many pain meds cause constipation) and sent her on her way.

The second hospital has an ER doctor who sounds like an idiot. Once again, had he taken a normal patient history, he would have found out she had not had a bowel movement for many days and the pain was probably associated with the constipation.

The third hospital got it right after reviewing the CT Scan and x-rays, but a simple "when was the last time you had a bowel movement" would have provided the same conclusion.

Finally, those of you who are close to her probably should ask if, and when, she had her last bowel movement. It is a fairly easy question and that type of knowledge is invaluable when things like this happen. If you know her history and she is unable to answer those questions, it is incumbent upon you to provide that information.

The bottom line is Hospital 1 and Hospital 2 were negligent. The family and the patient did not provide information about the lack of a bowel movement for 17 days. Sure she suffered and for no reason, but who is to blame? The doctors for not asking the right questions, or the patient and the patient's family for not volunteering this information? Chalk this one up to a hard lesson learned and make sure you all are more aware of her condition. If she ever has to go to an ER again, you can provide the doctors with all kinds of valuable information. Doctors can work miracles, but they can't do it without information. They don't read minds.

If you are compelled to sue, then by all means find a lawyer and explore your options. Just remember that the points I brought up (and they probably upset you - for that I am sorry) are the same points the doctors' lawyers will ask in court.

For future reference - Pain Medication = constipation. Ask her every day if she had a bowel movement. Good luck and I hope your mother continues to hang in there.

I'm sorry your mother is terminally ill; I'm glad she's still with you and hope she's found some relief from her pain.

It's rare for a doctor to be so reckless as to give a precise prediction of how long a cancer patient has to live, be it a year or 2 days, cancer is so unpredictable.

It may be that the doctor at the second hospital intended to let you know that she may only have had days to live (which I'm sorry, may still be the case), and meant to imply that this could be as little as two days. He will have told you this in good faith.

While I understand your anger, no I don't think you have any cause to sue anybody.

My mother died of cancer, so I know how agonising this is for you and all your family. My thoughts are with you.

Jack? That's ridiculous. The two I know from my church that were diagnosed were both given 3 months to live. Luckily they didn't listen to the MDs and went natural and are still alive.

I've heard it can be dangerous to have constipation to this extent. I would assume things in the colon would rot and start to give off lots of toxins. In fact, eating a standard American diet can leave things like meat in your colon for too long and it rots and gives off toxins in just a few days. Just think about it - even cooked meat left on the counter at 98.6 degrees starts to be real nasty in short order. That's what's happening in your colon, even though it's breaking down. Please be aware that true meat eaters like dogs and tigers have a very short and straighter large intestine and stronger stomach acid. In addition they can handle raw meat. Their saliva is even several times more acidic than ours to my knowledge. When it snakes through our colon, it has a tendency to be there a while, thus causing things like colon cancer. It's simple cause and effect. You hear of many people that eat a poor diet that go days without a bowel movement. Not healthy at all, then they ask why they have diseases?

Oils can help slick up your colon to get things to move through. Maybe like extra virgin olive oil, make sure you use a healthy oil. Increasing with natural dietary fiber and reducing dense meats helps. The goal is to attempt to stay healthy and avoid trauma conditions. Sorry to hear of her condition, but maybe that will help all of us.

The doctors say she has ovarian cancer though. If they say she's terminal, why not look into alternatives since it's beyond the doctors? See http://www.hacres.com, http://www.pcrm.org, http://www.cancertutor.com and other alternatives people offer on this site from a natural perspective. Optimum health through nutrition is an ND's speciality. Others may also have experience here. Please don't listen to scare tactics that alternatives don't work - thousands have testimonials that say otherwise. My own experience has seen extremely positive results.
