His health is fine, your best bet for up to date info is just to visit the berlin zoo webpage which is here:
http://www.zoo-berlin.de/en.html
As far as the situation he was in when he was born it could have been handled differently but the end result would have been his death. With his mother not wanting to care for him he needed someone else to care for him and feed him (milk). That only left the keepers/vets to care for him. There is a chance he could had been shipped to another zoo and given to another mother bear who was nursing, but there are very strict laws around moving polar bears from zoo to zoo due to their status and there was no way of knowing if another bear would have cared for it. Plus by the time they found another mother and got him to her Knut would have starved.
The problem was you had people who said because the bear is a captive animal the zoo had the responsibilty to do all it could to care for the bear... that is part of their job. Then you had the Animal Rights nut jobs who said they should have let Knut die because if this same situation occured in the wild he would have died.
Personally I think the zoo did the right thing. They have the responsibility to care for the animals at their zoo and to let a healthy cub (of an species that is in trouble) die for no reason would have been neglect. The AR people could argue that if it was the wild he would have died, which is correct, but he was not in the wild.

Update to the situation: Currently the Berlin zoo where Knut is housed and Neumünster Zoo, who was promised ice bear offspring and who claim Knut are debating who'll get it. As Knut is quite a money machine for Berlin they are understandably reluctant to let go of him, but then a contract is a contract.
Also the handler who raised Knut has died in September.
